Best way to help? Support your local vendors!

Groundcover News is a street newspaper. It takes articles written by people who have or are experiencing homelessness and publishes them. We are then able to sell our writing to make a living as published authors. Our stories tell what life is like on the streets Our articles share our experiences which shed light on what really happens on the streets, in the homeless camps, in the jails and government offices, and the community at large. We also write about what we are doing to change the system and restore ourselves to self-sufficiency. It brings humanity to us and gives us a voice in the community. We ask to be seen and heard – Groundcover News does that.

Make a huge difference and get a great reading experience! Groundcover News is printed every two weeks by the Tecumseh Herald at cost. The office of Groundcover News charges vendors 50 cents for the paper and we sell them for the cover price of $2. The profit for the sale goes directly to us vendors so we can support ourselves.

How does buying Groundcover News help?

Personally – I support myself on my writing and paper sales. If you become my regular customer you will literally be keeping food on my table and a roof over my head. One of the most important functions of Groundcover News is to be a bridge between you and the homeless in our area. Establishing personal relations with vendors not only helps the financially, but emotionally and mentally. It is well know that mental deterioration is part of the root cause of entering and inability to exit homelessness. Getting to know the vendors has a therapeutic effect by meeting the human need for belonging. When you purchase a paper, you become important to someone. When you read they paper, they become important to you.

Locally – Your purchase of Groundcover News has a trickle down affect to other GCN vendors in the community. If the paper you buy is seen and read by others, they will be more likely to buy one from another vendor. Word of mouth saves lives!

Also locally – GCN advertises for local businesses. If you want to be a contributing member of the Ypsilanti community, check out the places that advertise with us! GCN vendors are all locals, so the money we make goes back into the community.

Culturally – the stigmas of homelessness actually make it harder for people with lived experience to lift themselves out of poverty. The lack of priority of human services is due to cold and misguided reception of society’s rejects from the system. Many people suffer mental illness or come from homes that were fatally unsupportive become homeless in a way that could have been prevented. GCN exposes such stories. Understanding this not only combats prejudice and bias, but also becomes a call to action. Whether to the individual or the homeless population. Read all about it today!

Globally – Groundcover News is part of the International Network of Street Papers. This network represents more than 100 papers from 30 countries across the globe. All providing voice, opportunity and solutions for people experiencing homelessness anywhere in the world. The integrity and legitimacy of self-employment can elevate a person from poverty to self-sufficiency, street papers provide that opportunity. You add by participating in the movement as a regular customer!

More important than the sale is the relationship we seek to build with our community and you, our readers. The relationship helps the vendor and the reader by building an important connection. Readers are also able to support the financial needs of their vendor friends by become regular customers.

Our job to change the way people think about homelessness and building community. Check out how we do this globally through the International Network of Street Newspapers. Be sure to watch the video!

keep updated on our progress.

My Name is Jim, I am vendor 139 for Groundcover News, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Mi. In 2019 I suffered through a personal tragedy that resulted in my becoming homeless. Groundcover News was able to help me get back on my feet. Between writing articles and selling the paper, I have been given a jumpstart back to self-sufficiency.

IN 1990, I arrived at Eastern Michigan University to study mathematics and become a secondary-level math teacher. My motivation came from my days in high school. Raised in a mostly white suburb of Detroit, I was concerned about the violence and poverty I saw happening in the inner city. My young mind thought if I could teach critical thought, people would be better able to solve their problems.

Years later, in 2007, I was able to live my vision. Although not in the inner city of Detroit, I realized my goal by being hired at an alternative high school for at-risk youth. I was able to teach a vital skill and how to reach kids who were disillusioned by the system.

After spending time in the field of teaching I realized I could have a greater impact working directly with people on the street. My life has become about helping the homeless and my vehicle for that is Groundcover News.
